Noted as the “Aerospace Capital of the World,” Palmdale is the site of some of the country’s largest and most successful aerospace companies. The area was dominated by the agricultural industry until the coming of World War II. During this time, the United States government established what is now known as Edwards Air Force Base in 1933 and purchased Palmdale Airport in 1952 in order to institute a facility devoted to aerospace development and testing. The establishment is now known as the United States Air Force Plant 42. Soon after, aerospace companies began relocating to the area, making the industry the chief source of employment in the Antelope Valley.
Prominent companies dedicated to the aerospace industry in the area include:
Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company A significant element in the Antelope Valley for decades, Lockheed Martin’s Palmdale facility, which employs between 3,900-5,000 people, focuses on aeronautic development and prototyping.
Northrop Grumman Corporation Northrop Grumman is an innovative global defense and technology company with locations in 25 countries. Its Palmdale branch currently has 1,800-plus employees working hard to produce technologically advanced products, services and systems.
The Boeing Company More than 1,000 people comprise the Boeing group at the Palmdale/Edwards Air Force Base. The Boeing Company works closely with NASA and the Department of Defense by affording a wealth of useful products and services.
Palmdale is also home to the AERO Institute, which has facilitated the aerospace industry by providing ample educational opportunities in aerospace science, engineering and technical skills through several esteemed colleges and universities.
