Palmdale’s medical community has grown by leaps and bounds in the last few years, with new healthcare establishments being developed left and right. With these new facilities being constructed, city residents do not have to look far for the medical services they need. Modern hospitals, surgical centers, dialysis centers, adult care institutions and medical offices dot the map of the Antelope Valley.

In October of 2002, the state-of-the-art Antelope Valley Health Center was constructed at the southeast corner of Palmdale Boulevard and 40th Street East. The health center provides patients with a number of services including family medicine, family planning, immunizations and obstetrics/gynecology, among others. The Antelope Valley Health Center was also joined together by a new urgent care clinic a short time ago. The two linked clinics now serve more than 2,000 patients each month.

In March of 2003, Kaiser Permanente established a $16.5 million medical office building in Palmdale, affording its large base of Kaiser members with a multitude of healthcare services. Family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, nephrology, obstetrics/gynecology, psychiatry, radiology, laboratory, health education, nutritional services, social services and pharmacy round out the medical offerings at the 47,000-square-foot facility.

For comprehensive medical care, Palmdale residents have had to travel to nearby Lancaster – home to Antelope Valley Hospital and Lancaster Community Hospital – or outside of the Antelope Valley completely. For years, the city has been advocating for a hospital in the Palmdale community. In fact, Palmdale stands as the largest city in California without a local hospital. The need for a facility of this kind in the area has continually grown, and now that need is being met with the construction of a modern medical center.

The development of the 250,000-square-foot Palmdale Regional Medical Center has begun, with completion of the facility slated for 2009. The opening of this hospital will allow residents to access a number of medical services without having to travel elsewhere.

The city enlisted the esteemed Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS) – one of the USA’s top hospital developers and operators – to establish and oversee the new hospital, which will be located on 37 acres at Tierra Subida and Avenue Q-5. The Palmdale Regional Medical Center will offer up to 250 beds, which includes a 25-bed emergency room. Upon completion, the hospital’s ER will double the area’s current number of ER beds and will ultimately stand as the largest ER in the Antelope Valley. Further features include a cutting-edge cardiac care program, OB/GYN services, pediatrics and general medical care. Additionally, UHS is hoping to bring in the presence of a large cancer organization to the campus as well.

On top of the construction of the new hospital, UHS is building two 60,000-square foot medical office towers. A new low-income housing facility for the area’s mature adults is also under construction by National Community Renaissance. Eighty independent-living units will be available for Palmdale seniors upon completion. What’s more, further medical office buildings are being built surrounding the hospital campus at a rapid rate, with six new facilities already approved by the city’s Planning Department.
