A Vibrant Cultural Life
The McCallum Theatre and Bob Hope Performing Arts Center, situated on the campus of the College of the Desert, host internationally-known musicians, orchestras and stage shows throughout the year. The fine arts department at COD is known for the quality of its opera and musical productions. Numerous choral groups, concert series, and dance groups enliven the arts scene in Palm Desert throughout the year. The Palm Springs Museum's Annenberg Theater hosts many unique music and theatre groups throughout the year.
Don't miss the "Fabulous Palm Springs Follies," with guest stars and a chorus line of lovelies; the entire cast is 54-87 years young! Nearby La Quinta hosts the nationally known, juried art show, the La Quinta Arts Festival (March), and El Paseo and Corporate Way abound with galleries and design studios, frequently open to the public.
Palm Desert's unique "Art in Public Places" program uses funds provided by developers to place works of art in public areas for public enjoyment and discussion. The boulevard on El Paseo is a prime location for the display of artworks, this year showcasing 12 bronze works by Peter Voulkos, known as the father of abstract expressionism in sculpture. A walking tour of Palm Desert Civic Center Park will take you past over two dozen sculptures, including the powerful Holocaust Memorial and the Peace Memorial, inscribed with the names of residents who lost their lives defending peace.
