Port Hueneme is a charter city, with a city manager and a five-member city council elected by the people. They serve as Port Huenemes representatives, express the values of the electorate in keeping pace with community needs, and establish the quality of municipal services in the urban environment.
The city council determines service levels and revenue obligations through the adoption of an annual budget. It authorizes expenditures, establishes services and operating policies, and adopts such regulatory measures as may be necessary for the mutual protection of the community.
The law enforcement responsibilities in Port Hueneme are upheld by its police force of 21 sworn officers. Port Hueneme is one of only five cities in the county with its own police department. The average response time of the department is generally within five minutes. Residents enjoy a peaceful lifestyle where crimes per capita are among the lowest in Ventura County.
