Rancho Mirage has a variety of lodging options, from world-class, award-winning destination resorts to mid-range hotels and a casino hotel.
The turmoil in the financial markets in the fall of 2008 has caused the opening of the Ritz-Carlton resort to be held back. The owners of the resort originally had a significant portion of their financing through Lehman Brothers, which collapsed in October 2008. Contractors working on the $500 million restoration and expansion of the hilltop resort left the worksite after hearing the news, fearing they would not be paid.
The delay has been disappointing for all involved. The renovations were about 85 percent complete at the time.
The tourism industry provides a significant portion of the City’s budget and wants to see the Ritz open as soon as possible. To boost the city’s standing in the tourism field, the City Council hired a tourism/marketing professional to provide promotions and marketing of the city’s hotels and related tourism businesses.
The Palm Springs Desert Resorts Convention and Visitors Authority (the region’s tourism bureau) and the city’s tourism/marketing director, along with the Rancho Mirage Chamber of Commerce, continue to successfully market the area as a resort destination, and this earned the City hosting duties in a number of national events and major conventions.
