Arts and Culture

Riverside is the leading center of arts and culture for the Inland Empire. Downtown Riverside’s historic buildings provide a unique setting for many of the community’s artistic and cultural offerings. Riverside’s four institutions of higher learning all offer full schedules of enjoyable concerts, exhibits, programs, festivals, and other activities. The Riverside Arts Council promotes Riverside’s cultural life, supports the arts, and sponsors events such as the Mayor’s Ball for the Arts. These events and activities all combine to make Riverside the “in” place for entertainment and culture for local residents and visitors.

MUSIC & DANCE
The Inland Empire boasts several professional level orchestras and bands, plus numerous other instrumental and vocal groups. From jazz to tap and rap, Riverside has produced individual performers and combos of all types that are regionally or nationally known. The innovative Bre Dance studio and University of California Riverside’s dance programs are examples of cutting edge dance experiences.

Performances at University of California Riverside, Riverside Community College, La Sierra University, California Baptist University and in various commercial venues add to the opportunities to hear and see top-name music and dance groups.

• The Inland Empire/Riverside County Philharmonic is a California music success story. The 72-member professional orchestra along with international Maestro Patrick Flynn draws loyal audiences from all over the Southland to its Classics and Pops concerts each season.

• The Riverside Concert Band was established in 1876 to celebrate the nation’s centennial and today is proud to be known as the oldest year round community volunteer band. The Band officially became a non-profit organization in 1981 and has been operating independently since that time. It is run by a Board of Directors that is elected annually. The Riverside Concert Band consists of 50 to 55 volunteer musicians who play for the love of music. The Band maintains the historical tradition of American concert band music by playing 20-25 concerts each year throughout Southern California. Band members represent all ages and a variety of backgrounds, performing the world’s most beloved and cherished tunes: classical to traditional to hand-clapping patriotic.

• The school is located in downtown Riverside, two blocks north of the Riverside Freeway, near the Historic Mission Inn. It occupies the former grand ballroom and mezzanine of the historical landmark Aurea Vista Hotel. The building accommodates approximately 40 classes per week, as well as company rehearsals of California Riverside Ballet.

• In 1977, Ana de la Tejera founded Ballet Folklorico de Riverside, formerly de Arlanza, for the preservation of the Mexican Culture and Heritage through the instruction and presentation of traditional Mexican dances.

Riverside Master Chorale

• The roots of the Riverside Master Chorale can be traced directly to 1945 and the Riverside Civic Chorus. The city choral tradition continued in 1961 with the organization of the Riverside Chorale. A new emphasis on the performance of choral masterworks brought about increased civic recognition and support of the ensemble.

The chorus was reorganized under the current name in 1980 and became an established class at Riverside Community College, further strengthening its commitment to promoting choral excellence in education while maintaining its identity as a civic organization. This unique alliance of community, education and choral art is still fundamental to the Chorale’s mission and purpose today.

• Riverside Art Museum presents nationally touring shows as well as exhibits of local artists. Currently, the Museum boasts two spacious first floor galleries, two smaller second floor galleries, one of which is a permanent print gallery, and a second floor Mezzanine exhibition space. A Children’s Gallery and studio art classroom are also located on the second floor along with administrative offices.
