The City of Riverside is served by two K-12 public school districts, the Riverside Unified School District (RUSD) and the Alvord Unified School District (AUSD). Special programs offered at various high schools include numerous advanced placement classes, science magnet program, performing arts magnet, international business, International Baccalaureate, Regional Occupational Programs, internships, foreign exchange programs, and a full range of athletic and scholastic opportunities.

Riverside Unified School District is a growing district serving nearly 43,000 K-12 students. RUSD employs almost 5,000 people (full and part-time), making the District one of the largest employers in the Inland Empire. More than 40 percent of the teaching staff hold master’s degrees and many hold doctorates. 

RUSD operates 45 schools, covering 92 square miles – 29 elementary, 6 middle schools, 5 comprehensive high schools, 2 alternative schools, 2 continuation schools, 1 special education preschool, and 1 adult school.

Riverside Unified schools regularly receive national and state recognition for excellence in leadership and student achievement. In the past two years, two schools received the prestigious National Blue Ribbon School designation and nine schools were named California Distinguished Schools (five elementary schools, one middle school, and three high schools).

In May 2005, Newsweek magazine named three of Riverside’s five high schools among America’s top 1,000 schools.

Alvord Unified School District

Alvord Unified District serves over 20,000 students in the western portion of the City of Riverside and a small portion of eastern Corona. Alvord employs more than 1,475 people.

AUSD has a reputation for maintaining high academic standards and innovative learning environments. AUSD has 12 elementary schools, four middle schools, two high schools, and one alternative/continuation high school.

Additionally, Riverside is home to the California School for the Deaf and Sherman Indian High School. The area also has a variety of private pre-schools and K-12 schools.
