Higher Education

The presence of four major institutions of higher education is an important factor in shaping the economy and culture of Riverside. All four colleges have been undergoing enrollment growth and building new facilities. With each school offering different programs, students can choose among: the University of California, Riverside (UCR); Riverside Community College (RCC); California Baptist University (CBU); and La Sierra University (LSU).

Riverside is also within a reasonable commute to California State University at San Bernardino the University of Redlands and about a dozen other excellent colleges in the region.

Areas of strength in Riverside’s colleges include: all the sciences, technology, business management, education, engineering, medical professions, humanities, and the arts. In many occupational fields there are cooperative programs and internships involving businesses, the Greater Riverside Chambers, local government, and the region’s schools, colleges, and universities.

As important economic engines and major employers, Riverside’s schools and colleges attract new residents, spend money locally, and are a source of skilled employees. The sterling reputation of scientific research at UCR stimulates high-tech development, including in the University Research Park and Technology Park.

Riverside Community College

Riverside Community College offers more than 100 comprehensive programs to aid students seeking transfer to a 4-year college or university, a 2-year degree, a professional certificate, occupational training, or simply to update their work skills. RCC has been the community’s college of choice for nearly nine decades. Each semester, more that 30,000 students take classes online or at one of RCC’s campuses or education centers. RCC’s enrollment includes more than 13,300 students.

RCC offers more than 60 vocational and apprenticeship programs in fields such as engineering, high technology, healthcare, culinary arts, international trade, auto tech, and other services. RCC has over 300 full-time faculty and 1,000 adjunct faculty help prepare a qualified work force.

La Sierra University is located in inland Southern California and is part of the Seventh-day Adventist system of higher education. The University offers graduate and undergraduate curricula in applied and liberal arts and sciences, business and management, religion, and programs for professional education in fulfillment of requirements for teaching credentials.

Intellectual pursuits are facilitated by the University Library, museums, Observatory, Arboretum, Brandstater Gallery, MICOL computing laboratory, Learning Support and Testing Center, Hancock and Stahl Centers, and other campus resources. Physical fitness is encouraged on campus by such activities as intramural and varsity sports, physical education courses, and by three swimming pools, a fitness center, and tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts.

Students at LSU come from nearly every state in the U.S. and 60 countries around the world. Close interaction exists between 1,400 undergraduate and graduate students and 110 full-time faculty.

La Sierra offers study abroad programs, language immersion, archaeological digs, and service programs available in every continent. LSU helps students find jobs, and has an Award-Winning Students in Free Enterprise program.

Since it’s founding in 1950, California Baptist University (CBU) has set the standard for faith-based educational excellence. Today, CBU offers 27 undergraduate and 10 graduate accredited degree programs to more than 3,000 students drawn from across the nation and world.

The beautiful 90-acre main campus of California Baptist University is situated in the heart of Riverside’s historic Magnolia Avenue district, just a short drive from popular beaches and mountain resorts. The University of California, Riverside is one of ten campuses of the University of California, generally recognized as the preeminent public university system in the world.
