The San Gabriel Parks and Recreation Department offers a number of services and activities to the residents of San Gabriel. There are three major parks that provide picnic and playground areas within the City. Award-winning Smith Park creatively interacts with the area’s history and the Native American Gabrielino-Tongva people. The park is the home of the San Gabriel Sea Gulls, a youth swim team, and has a 25-meter swimming pool, tiny tot playground for children six years and under, children’s playground, and lighted tennis, basketball and handball courts. The pool is open during the summer months for swimming lessons and public recreational swimming.

Vincent Lugo Park is a great place for a picnic. It has many picnic shelters, tables, barbecues, a lighted baseball diamond, playgrounds, and the Laguna de San Gabriel Nautical Playground, also known as “Dinosaur Park.” Roosevelt Park has lighted tennis courts, a playground, and areas for picnics as well.

The San Gabriel Parks and Recreation Department also provides a wide variety of activities for every age group, most of which are year-round. Children can join soccer and Little League teams, utilize the playgrounds and swimming pools during the summer, and once school starts, after-school programs are offered. Adults can enroll in recreational classes like Dance for Fitness, Step Aerobics, Ballroom Dance, Salsa Dance, Polynesian and Tap Dance, Self-Defense, Tai Chi, Cardio-Kickboxing, and Yoga. Adults can also join the San Gabriel Tennis Club or softball leagues. Senior citizen programs are all held at the San Gabriel Adult Recreation Center. Every Wednesday and Friday there is a senior dance, and senior citizens can also join the numerous senior clubs.

Another facility available for club meetings or special gatherings, by reservation only, is the Community Recreation Center. The Parks and Recreation Office is also located in this building. Many clubs schedule their meetings at the Community Recreation Center. San Gabriel residents should have no problem finding something fun to do within the City.
