Temple City History and Community Organizations

Recent History of Temple City

In the early 1900s, the city’s namesake, Walter P. Temple, purchased 285 acres of land four miles east of San Gabriel. Envisioning a community where people of medium income could afford to live and own their homes, he divided the area into lots and laid out the park (Temple City Park) facing Las Tunas Drive. He named streets after those close and dear to the family and petitioned the Pacific Electric Railway Company to extend its Los Angeles to Alhambra line to a depot adjacent to Temple City Park. The original official name of the community was “Town of Temple,” which was changed to “Temple City” in 1928. The city was incorporated as a general law city in the State of California on May 25, 1960, and later on April 16, 1971, Temple City incorporated as a charter city.
