Great food in Tuolumne County goes back a century and a half…to the kettles and firepits of the miners from around the world, seeking their fortune in the gold mines. The types of foods and preparation were the result of the mix and variety of the people who shared in this feast. Each of them brought their thoughts, customs, dress and food. The restaurants in Tuolumne County today continue to provide a tapestry of tastes and ethnic presentations in keeping with our heritage. The languages, customs and tastes of the camps have been compared to the biblical Tower of Babel.
The spices and recipes from around the globe were carefully guarded and brought to this county to create the food of these people. The result was the most eclectic food selections found in California — when Mark Twain was telling his tales and the hills were singing of gold.
Our food celebrates the wide variety of cultures from which we descended.
