California State University (CSU), Stanislaus, preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2010, provides exceptional higher education programs for students from all over the world and particularly those from Stanislaus, Calaveras, Mariposa, Merced, San Joaquin and Tuolumne counties. The university significantly impacts the region by playing an important role in the development of the intellectual, financial, cultural and social life of residents from Stanislaus and surrounding counties. Many academic programs are bolstered by partnerships in the region’s public and private sectors. CSU Stanislaus achieved national recognition from “The Princeton Review,” which included the university in its “Best 366 Colleges” guidebook featuring the top 10 percent of colleges in the entire United States. CSU Stanislaus was also named one of only 165 “America’s Best Values” colleges by “The Princeton Review.”

History

The campus opened its doors as Stanislaus State College in 1960 with 756 students and now has a growing enrollment of about 8,900 and nearly 40,000 alumni. Today, the university features modern classrooms, laboratories, performing arts facilities, residential complexes, athletic and intramural competition facilities, and a “one-stop” administration building. A state-of-the art science building, the Nora and Hashem Naraghi Hall of Science, was completed in 2007. Students approved a new recreation complex featuring a fitness center and stadium for soccer, football and track and field that is scheduled to open in early 2009. A new university bookstore, completed in fall 2008, is an architectural showpiece on campus and doubled the size of the previous facility. Streams, bridges, trees and flowers make CSU Stanislaus one of the most beautiful campuses in the country.

Faculty and Facilities

Average class sizes of under 20 enable students to get to know the university’s more than 450 faculty. About 80 percent of full-time faculty members hold doctoral degrees. The faculty’s commitment to teaching excellence guarantees students a rich and rewarding intellectual environment, and graduates have excelled in fields ranging from business to medicine. The library, computer laboratories and classrooms feature the latest in computer technology.

Academic Programs

CSU Stanislaus offers 42 undergraduate programs, 23 master’s and doctoral degree programs, and seven post-graduate credentials in six colleges – College of the Arts, College of Business Administration, College of Education, College of Human and Health Sciences, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and College of Natural Sciences. Ten academic programs are nationally accredited – art, chemistry, music, nursing, public administration, psychology, social work, theatre, College of Business Administration and College of Education (Teacher Education and Teacher Credentialing). Pre-professional programs are offered in law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, veterinary medicine, optometry laboratory technology and medical lab technology. A new Genetic Counseling master’s degree program opened in fall 2008.

Preparing the Workforce

CSU Stanislaus has educated and graduated more than 12,000 K-12 teachers. The Liberal Studies program, designed to prepare teachers prior to their entry into the graduate-level Education Credential program, is the university’s most popular major. The Pre-Licensure Nursing program, established in 2002, has doubled its enrollment for spring 2008, bringing the total number of annual openings to 70 and helping to meet the demand for more qualified nurses in the Central Valley. The Business Administration and Criminal Justice programs have also experienced significant enrollment growth in recent years.
