PUBLIC SAFETY & AWARENESS
In California, it is best to always be prepared for a possible earthquake. A store of earthquake supplies and equipment should be kept in an easily accessible place in the home. Necessary items include a shovel, hammer and nails, sleeping bags, rope, dry food, water, clothing, a flashlight and a small radio.
If an earthquake occurs, one should immediately take cover and remain there until the shaking stops. Stay indoors, but if caught outdoors, move to a clear area away from trees, poles and electrical wires. Remember to watch out for falling plaster and ceiling tiles and to stay away from windows, bookcases, overhead cupboards, file cabinets, mirrors, hanging plants, large appliances and other heavy objects. Once the earthquake and any aftershocks are over, inspect all gas, water and electric lines, shutting off ones that appear to be damaged.
