The largest single employer in Buena Vista is the Buena Vista Correctional Complex, a medium security state prison.

With high-speed Internet available, there is a growing interest in home-based businesses. Tourism is very important to Buena Vista. The population swells in the summer when the summer residents and summer employees arrive.
