The county seat, Craig, has a population of nearly 10,000 – enough to provide all the amenities a visitor or newcomer might want.
Moffat County is a place of “do-it-yourself adventure.” From camping in areas in view of petroglyphs, to hiking forest or high desert trails, to rock climbing, horseback riding and rafting the river, your Northwest Colorado experience will be everything you want it to be.
In Moffat County, visitors can hike a mountain trail or gaze for miles across a desert canyon. You’re almost guaranteed to see antelope grazing alongside the highways or eagles flying over the ninth hole of the beautiful Yampa Valley Golf Course.
The Yampa River flows through the heart of Moffat County, perfect for a lazy boat ride or a whitewater experience. It also sustains many of the area’s farms and ranches, the heart of any visitor’s Western experience.
If backcountry adventure isn’t up your alley, that’s OK too. Craig’s two museums, quaint downtown and collection of chainsaw carvings will keep you busy and give you plenty to tell your friends about.
Summer is the time that the town gears up for warm-weather festivals. The community celebrates Grand Olde West Days in May. The three-day Memorial Day holiday weekend event includes a street festival, gun shows, a parade and a professional rodeo bull-riding event. In June, chainsaw wood carvers converge on City Park, where they turn standing tree trunks into works of art in four days of intense carving. The event ends when participants judge the sculptures during a celebration that features food and craft vendors, plus a free concert in the park. Visit Craig’s City Park at any time to see relics of past wood carving events.
