The hills and mountains surrounding the Eagle Valley provide endless opportunities for fun, and recreation is a central focus of both Eagle and Gypsum. Both towns provide numerous activities for all area residents.
The Western Eagle County Metropolitan Recreation District (headquartered in Eagle) offers seasonal leagues for just about every sport in Gypsum, Eagle and Edwards, and a number of facilities are available.
A new outdoor pool opened in Eagle, and an ice rink facility (which is now home to the Red Wing Alumni and Mountaineers annual face-off) was recently opened. A recreation center is scheduled to open in Gypsum by spring of 2006. The Brush Creek Community Playground at Eagle Ranch was a labor of love for the scores of volunteers who contributed their time and talents to construct a playground.
Upward Athletics (halfway between Eagle and Gypsum) is a new recreational facility in Eagle County that is run by WECMRD (Western Eagle County Metropolitan Recreation District). The facility offers gymnastics, fitness and skateboarding.
WECMRD gymnastics has programs that vary from parent and infant classes to boys and girls recreational gymnastics, which develop into competitive team gymnastics.
Golfers can enjoy the beautiful Arnold Palmer-designed, 18-hole Eagle Ranch Golf Course – the first public fee course in Eagle County. With five tees per hole from which to choose, residents enjoy reduced-rate greens fees and a challenging golf experience at every ability level. The course also boasts the valley’s most elaborate practice facility and a broad program of lessons and clinics for both children and adults. Golfers in the area can take advantage of the longer playing season afforded by the milder western Eagle County climate.
Gypsum’s skatepark is a result of business support and the efforts of the Gypsum Recreation Committee, which strives to create more recreational opportunities for the community. The work of the committee has also resulted in adult softball fields, an outdoor amphitheater and sledding hills.
In June of 2004, Eagle Valley celebrated the long awaited arrival of The Back Bowl – a state-of-the-art bowling alley complete with 20 lanes, a game room and a bar and grill.
