West Grand School District

dinosaur

West Grand School District is a small, rural school system comprised of approximately 500 students in grades Kindergarten through 12th.

Nestled in a quiet valley of the Rocky Mountains, between Steamboat Springs and Silverthorne, the schools are the heart of the community and the district is constantly searching for ways to better serve the needs of its parents, children and community. The school district enjoys small student-teacher ratios and has become personally invested in the academic, physical and social success of each enrolled student.

A total staff of approximately 80 and an administrative team consisting of two principals and one superintendent serve the students of the West Grand School District. The district also has five directors, who oversee the departments of transportation, food service, maintenance, finance and technology. In addition, 40 certified staff members are part of the district. The student body is made up of approximately 240 students at the elementary school, 100 students at the middle school and 160 at the high school.

Although the West Grand School District is a small school district, it still offers a full range of educational services and opportunities that are normally only offered by larger school districts. Students are provided exemplary instructional programming on a daily basis, with a rigorous curriculum that challenges the students to perform at an optimum level. In addition, the district also has a full range of curriculum offerings, which provides struggling students with the necessary remedial assistance and the appropriate enrichment activities for the high ability students. The district also offers a number of distance learning classes, advanced placement courses, a formal gifted program, enrichment activities, specialized Friday School programming, a strong fine arts program, exemplary technology programming and a caring staff that is dedicated to helping students succeed.

In addition to its academic offerings, the district also provides a wide range of athletic programming and extracurricular opportunities. Extracurricular opportunities are available for each child in the school district. Students are able to find something of interest and because of the district’s small numbers, students enjoy a high rate of participation in the activities they choose. The athletic teams have been extremely successful in the past, having won a number of regional and state championships in football, wrestling, track, basketball and spirit/pom team.

Students are offered an opportunity to participate in band, forensics, robotics, astronomy, drama, choral/voice and a number of other activities as well. The district also believes that students must become active members of the community and become productive citizens. With that said, students are required to perform and document community service hours as part of their requirements for graduation.

The district is currently involved in a number of capital improvement projects and is extremely excited about the passage of a bond initiative last year, which enabled the district to build a new Pre-K-8 school. This has provided the opportunity to consolidate the older elementary and middle schools into one school, which will be more efficient and effective to operate.

Construction began in March of 2007 on the new school, which is now complete and open for business. The district has also placed a new roof over the entire high school structure. Within the last three years, additions have included a new community park, a walking track, an all-weather running track, a Veteran’s Memorial Park, a 7,000 square foot skatepark, a splash pad and an observation dome to the area’s community facility assets.

The West Grand School District operates on a four-day week with an active Friday School Program, which provides enrichment and remediation services for students. Students attend normal school, Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, a host of unique cultural, physical, social and enrichment opportunities for students who are being academically successful are supplied. Also on Fridays, specialized remediation services are obtainable to students who are struggling academically. Students have the opportunity to explore new avenues if their grades are acceptable and are required to receive additional assistance if they are not being successful.

All the district’s schools are fully accredited, making significant academic progress over the last few years. The West Grand School District is constantly searching for ways to improve its instructional programs and to better serve the community served. Committed to continually working to improve the instructional program and to better align the curriculum with state standards, the schools are dedicated to ensuring students receive the best possible educational and extracurricular opportunities.

The school district is small enough to know each child and family individually, which in turn provides unique educational services on a personal basis, while still providing the range of offerings of larger school districts. The district is always excited about bringing new children and parents into the school family and would love to have you as part of our community.
