Located along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, Trinidad offers proximity to the best of Colorado recreation, both on the plains to its east and in mountain areas to its west. As a result, the community is filled with a wide range of exhilarating, fun and challenging outdoor activities.
The nearby Sangre de Cristo Mountains open the door to an exciting array of possibilities. The mountains themselves offer climbing, hiking and camping. The 2,000-acre Trinidad Lake State Park, meanwhile, sits in the foothills where the Santa Fe Trail and Scenic Highway of Legends meet. The park offers nine miles of hiking trails and campgrounds. Waterskiing, sailboarding and jetskiing are allowed on Trinidad Lake as well.
Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Monument Lake Park offers a breathtaking view of the Spanish Peaks. The park features adobe-style motel rooms and cabins with bathrooms and showers, along with a restaurant, bar, store and campground.
Las Animas County and Trinidad are also home to a multitude of recreational facilities, including health clubs, indoor senior and children’s organizations, and several inviting summer camps.
Also located in Trinidad is a 16,000-square-foot community center that contains a regulation-size gymnasium, 11 tennis courts and four baseball/softball fields. The city also boasts five city parks, and an immaculately manicured nine-hole golf course, which is considered one of the best values in the country. A heated municipal swimming pool can be found open in Trinidad during the summer.
More traditional recreational outlets remain a big draw in the county. Trinidad’s concrete skate park has quickly become popular with area youths. An active running community has a full calendar of events while a robust system of softball, baseball, golf and other sports leagues ensures an outlet for any weekend warrior.
