As awareness and accountability for quality public elementary education have escalated in recent decades, the communities in Las Animas County have maintained their position at the forefront of the movement to prepare children for the challenges they will face throughout life. Home to six school districts: Hoehne, Aguilar, Trinidad, Primero, Branson and Kim, Las Animas County provides youths with a comprehensive quality education regardless of where they attend classes.
Schools in Trinidad District #1 include Eckhart Elementary, Fisher’s Peak Elementary, Trinidad Junior High, Trinidad High School and Corazon Alternative School. Hoehne District #3 is home to Hoehne School, while Aguilar District contains both an elementary school and a junior/senior high school. Trinidad also has parochial and Christian schools.
Higher education opportunities also abound in and around Las Animas County. Trinidad State Junior College (TSJC) has been educating students for over 80 years. The beautiful campus sits on 17 acres and has a breathtaking mountain view. With close to 50 programs to choose from, TSJC gives students a head start on a meaningful career by offering a wide range of community courses as well as associate degree programs in a host of disciplines. TSJC has many of the amenities of a four-year college, including the opportunity to live in an on-campus dorm. TSJC also has a great athletics program which includes basketball, baseball, golf, volleyball and softball.
