Many facilities in Hamden are dedicated to providing top-quality care, assistance and housing to the town’s large senior population. Harborside Health Care and Hamden Healthcare are among the town’s largest employers, and both operate skilled-nursing facilities for seniors.

Hamden Healthcare’s Arden House, a 360-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility, offers a wide range of services, including Alzheimer’s care, diabetes and dialysis management, hospice services and various forms of rehabilitation.

Harborside operates 41 facilities in eight states in New England, the mid-Atlantic region and the Midwest.

Active seniors who want the freedom of independent living combined with the security of around-the-clock staffing have additional options. Larson Place offers both assisted and traditional living arrangements, with 91 apartments for independent seniors, some overlooking scenic Lake Whitney. Separate facilities are offered for residents with Alzheimer’s and other memory-related concerns.

Laurel Gardens combines assisted and independent living with the amenities and grandeur you’d expect in a fine hotel. Facilities include a library, bar, ice cream parlor, inviting dining rooms with cherry furniture, gourmet meals and transportation. Staff members are on-call for residents 24 hours a day.

For traditional healthcare needs, Hamden Surgery and Medical Center provides care for those needing outpatient surgical procedures. As part of the Saint Raphael Healthcare System, it offers state-of-the-art technology in four operating rooms. The Hospital of Saint Raphael, which is part of the same healthcare system and is located in New Haven, is ranked by the AARP as one of the 50 finest hospitals in the nation.

In addition to the Hospital of Saint Raphael, Hamden residents are just minutes from Yale-New Haven Hospital. The area also offers numerous private practitioners and medical specialties.

Senior Services

Hamden’s Elderly Services Department provides resources, activities and programs for elderly residents and their caregivers through the Miller Senior Center, the Senior Transportation Program and the Elderly Outreach Office.

The Miller Senior Center focuses on educational, recreational and social offerings, serving 300 to 500 seniors each weekday. Activities include exercise programs, arts and crafts, bingo, billiards, entertainment, and a popular computer learning lab staffed by volunteers.

The Senior Transportation Program provides thousands of rides for elderly residents each year. Rides are available on weekdays, and all vehicles are equipped with wheelchair lifts.

The Elderly Outreach Office, located in Miller Senior Center, provides information, referrals and social services for residents.
