It is said that the year 1513 brought the great Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon to the shores of what is now the vast and booming Space Coast. Brevard County, named after George Washington Brevard, was made the official name of the area in 1855 and now prides itself as the birthplace of the U.S. Space Program.
Though the county has made tremendous strives as a high-tech haven, it has still preserved its rich heritage through a wealth of historical sites and districts.
The Titusville historical district is home to the North Brevard Historical Museum, a 1,200-square-foot building offering guests a glimpse into Brevard’s past through various displays of authentic artifacts and its extensive reference library.
The museum also provides information for a walking tour of the area’s downtown historical buildings. In addition to the historical museum in Titusville is the Valiant Air Command War Bird Museum, filled with aircraft and artifacts telling the story of aviation from World War I to now.
The expansive Brevard Museum of History and Science is located in Cocoa, along with the Alma Clyde Field Library of Florida History in Cocoa Village.

Nearby Melbourne Beach, Brevard’s oldest beach community, is home to the Ryckman House and the Community Chapel, both situated along the historic Ocean Avenue. And just south, patrons will find the Grant Historical House.
