Remembering our ROots Lake Wales has a long history dating back over three thousand years when the first inhabitants were attracted to the area for its bounty of fish, game and natural vegetation used for food and medicine. Native Americans found the area ideally suited to farming, hunting and fishing and later, for trading with their new neighbors from the north and west. New settlers raised cattle, farmed and began planting citrus, which became the greatest producing area in the world and a huge industry to this day. The settlers also lumbered the virgin stands of pine to extract the sap for turpentine stills beginning in the mid-1880s. Although the early forefathers and city planners could not have foreseen the tremendous growth in the past 80 years, they had the vision to create a basic design that works well today. Though a frontier town in its formative years, Lake Wales became an area leader in cultural arts and tourism in the early 1900s with the building of the Mountain Lake Community and the famous Bok Tower Gardens Carillon Tower which was erected in 1929. President Calvin Coolidge spoke at the dedication of the tower and gardens. Paved highways enabled the first tourists to visit this tranquil retreat. The Atlantic Coastline Railroad reached Lake Wales in 1911. It served as transport for the naval stores coming out of the turpentine stills, and opened the way for land development and tourism. The 11-story, 120-room Walesbilt Hotel was completed in 1926. Optimism of a booming tourist industry fueled this project. More and more people began traveling by automobile in the 1920s and 1930s. After a period of stagnation due to the Great Depression, tourism and growth picked up in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Although many historic buildings were torn down to build accommodations for tourists during this time, the Lake Wales historic district was spared. The success of Disney World in the 1970s further impacted the surrounding communities, bringing both tourists and employment opportunities. A community redevelopment movement was organized in the 1980s to preserve the architectural heritage of the city. In the 1990s a historic preservation element became part of the city's comprehensive plan so that future changes will respect and preserve the city's historic past. Lake Wales has preserved its historical and architectural heritage over the years and will do so into the future. As the motto of the Lake Wales Historical Society states, we are ÒPreserving the Past for the Benefit of the Future.Ó

Easy ACcess The location of Lake Wales, where two main state arteries intersect, makes transportation quick and easy to other parts of the state, the nation and the world. Short trips to Tampa and Orlando give access to large, international airports. Large seaports in Tampa, Port Everglades and Jacksonville are within easy reach. State Road 60 and U.S. 27 are two main highways that afford fast access to anywhere. Railways run through Lake Wales and an Amtrak station is located in nearby Winter Haven. The municipal airport has fueling facilities for small aircraft with Jet A and 100 low lead available 24 hours a day. Public transportation includes a Greyhound bus station located in Lake Wales and the Polk County public bus service which travels to the main cities and towns within the county. Taxi service and airport transportation are also available.

Entertainment & ATtractions Although Lake Wales is not a large city it does offer many opportunities for visitors and residents to enjoy events, cultural pursuits, local attractions and entertainment throughout the year. The staging of events and the many amenities are a joint effort of the community, the city, businesses and the Chamber of Commerce. Visitors can choose from a variety of accommodations which include bed and breakfast establishments, motels, cabins, mobile home rentals, apartments or rental homes. If camping is your preference, there are campgrounds and camping facilities for both RV's and tents in the area.

Something FOr EVeryone Lake Wales shopping and dining brings to customers a friendly, down-home feeling in a variety of settings. Shopping ranges from modern super stores to small specialty shops. Lake Wales is home to the Eagle Ridge Mall, a large regional shopping center located on U.S. Highway 27 North and Chalet Suzanne Road. Several shopping plazas both east and west of the city are located on State Road 60. Major department stores, banks, shops, grocery stores, restaurants, shops, service stations, drug stores, furniture stores, and service businesses are here. The downtown area features smaller shops and businesses in an historic setting. This is the place to leisurely stroll and enjoy the 1920s architecture. Join the FUn! Whether your style of recreation is to sit back and relax, play team sports, take up a new hobby, enjoy the solitude of a walk in beautiful surroundings or be a spectator, Lake Wales offers endless opportunities for recreation coupled with a mild climate which makes outdoor activities a year-round enjoyment. The City of Lake Wales maintains 250 acres of parks and community recreational facilities. The renovated Wailes Trail on the shores of Lake Wailes is the place to walk, jog, skate or bicycle. The 2 1/4 mile Trail has distance markers, benches, bike racks and water fountains. Fishing is an activity which can be accomplished either from the shore of the lake, from the new 120 foot fishing pier or from your boat launched at the public ramp. The pier has benches and a pretty gazebo with seating - a perfect spot to watch the spectacular sun sets. Fishing, boat rentals and the services of professional guides are available. Fishing is a big sport here on the many large and smaller lakes in the Lake Wales area. Bass are a popular catch and other species are regularly caught, including crappie, catfish, pike, bream and perch. While out on area lakes, you are likely to see other wildlife such as turtles, otters, alligators and prolific bird life. Local fish camps offer comfortable accommodations and friendly service. The Audubon Center and Nature Trail in Babson Park, six miles south of Lake Wales, has been the hub of local nature and conservation activity for many years. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts will find an abundance of opportunities in the Lake Wales area. Observers report seeing the Florida Scrub Jay, Swallow Tailed Kite, Sandhill Cranes, Great Blue Heron, Osprey, Bald Eagles and many others in their natural habitat. Nature lovers can visit the Tiger Creek Nature Preserve located some twelve miles south of Lake Wales. This 4,400 acre tract contains sand hills and swamps that have changed little since the native people camped there. Ten miles of creek and its riverine forest is protected by the nature preserve which is owned by the Nature Conservancy. Or you may want to visit Lake Kissimmee State Park east of Lake Wales. The Park consists of more than 5,000 acres and is bordered by Lakes Kissimmee, Tiger and Rosalie. This is natural Florida at its best with a wealth of wildlife and natural habitat. The park offers thirteen miles of hiking trails through pine flatwoods and open prairie where you might encounter white-tailed deer or wild turkeys. Activities offered include hiking, fishing, camping, boating and nature study. The City of Lake Wales is continuing its renovation and expansion plans in Leisure Services. The Mimi Hardman Cultural and Recreational Complex is underway with the opening of the gymnasium. Basketball and a weight room bring in over 3,000 people a month. In addition, the old high school complex will eventually house an auditorium, activity center, skateboard park and swimming pool. This is partly financed with a $700,000 grant. The tennis complex has been completely renovated and offers five lighted tennis courts and two racquetball courts. The city has used a $200,000 grant to help pay for new playground equipment at Crystal Park. On the drawing board is a 120-acre complex to include rinks for in-line skates, a five-field little league softball center, three multi-purpose playing fields, tennis courts, volleyball court, a rock climbing facility, basketball courts, tot-lots, racquetball courts, pedestrian trail, gymnasium and an adult horticultural center with viewing trail. The City of Lake Wales also has plans for a future 268-acre public golf course, revenues from which will help support leisure service department activities. There are many public golf courses in the area where you will find fully stocked pro shops, teaching golf professionals, fleets of well-maintained carts and a tee time to suit your needs. The Lake Wales YMCA located on Burns Avenue offers co-educational facilities to groups and individual members. The ÒYÓ is located on a 10-acre site west of the entrance to Bok Tower Gardens. Many of the YMCA programs are open to the general public. The ÒYÓ also sponsors daycare and after school programs and has a large meeting room with food facilities. Team sports, including football, baseball, soccer, basketball and softball are offered through school, city and community programs. Adults can either be participants or spectators at these games. The city offers adult flag football, men's adult basketball, senior baseball, and adult baseball. Programs for the younger set include Little League and Junior Magic Basketball. An active pram fleet sails every Sunday on Lake Wailes for eight weeks in the Spring and eight weeks in the Fall.

A Lifetime of EXperiences The Lake Wales Arts Council offers rotating exhibitions, concerts, workshops, a film series and Family Days. It also sponsors the Lake Wales Art Show, a juried fine arts festival, on the shores of Lake Wailes each March. The Lake Wales Arts Center building is the former Holy Spirit Catholic Church built in 1927 and is one of the best examples of Spanish mission style architecture in the state. A copy of the Arts Council schedule of activities and events is available for the asking. In addition to the Arts Center there are galleries located downtown that carry works by local as well as world wide artists. Here you will find paintings, glass ware, handmade jewelry, antique jewelry, pottery and sculpture. The city operates the Depot Museum complex which consists of four buildings along Scenic Highway. The largest, which houses the main office and exhibit hall, is the large pink depot which was built in 1928 and donated to the city by the Seaboard Coastline Railroad. A tin-roofed freight depot was built in 1916 and now houses the Lake Wales Model Railroad Club HO-scale model railroad layout of the East Coast from the Carolinas to Central Florida. A white cottage that once served as the Woman's Club was built in 1920. This is the children's museum and is the meeting place for the Girl Scouts and the University of South Florida classes. The fourth building is the Stuart-Dunn-Oliver Historic House Museum which is a white bungalow built in 1920. It is furnished with period furniture. Three railroad cars are located on the south side of the pink Depot. They are a renovated 1926 Seaboard Airline red caboose, a 1944 diesel engine and a 1916 Pullman car. The museum has various exhibits throughout the year as well as examples of the award winning art from the Lake Wales Art Show. A gift shop offers unique gifts at reasonable prices. The Depot Museum and Cultural Center is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is closed Sunday and on national holidays. The Lake Wales Library is also operated by the city, but it was originally a project of the Woman's Club as a bookshelf in their clubhouse. Later it was moved to the Dixie Walesbilt Hotel and then to City Hall. The Lake Wales Library Association was formed in 1957. A red brick building was built on the shores of beautiful Crystal Lake in 1960 and it was remodeled in 1991 which quadrupled its size. A large photographic history of Lake Wales covers one long hallway wall and a historical mural is in the lobby. The library serves the community by offering both traditional and high-tech services. Along with a quality book collection of 57,000 volumes, the library offers homework assistance, reference services, shut-in book delivery, Internet access, video teleconferencing, online catalog access and a variety of programs for adults and children. The Lake Wales Library is a member of the Polk County Library Cooperative and services are available to all residents of Polk County. The Lake Wales Little Theatre is an organization of volunteers who bring live musical and dramatic theatre to the town. Bok Tower Gardens brings music to Lake Wales with the historic bell tower carillon. The Imperial Symphony Orchestra Pops Concert in May is another treat at Bok Tower. The special events throughout the year include moonlight recitals, the International Carillon Festival, daily carillon recitals, Easter Sunrise service, many Christmas programs, lectures and workshops. The magnificent gardens and visitor center bring one to a place of peace and beauty. From the ÒWindow on the PondÓ nature observatory to the panoramic view from the peninsula's highest point on Iron Mountain, visitors enjoy nature at her best. A short drive away is mysterious and baffling Spook Hill. Here vehicles seem to roll uphill by themselves defying all logic. Legend has it that a large bull alligator moved into the lake near a Seminole Indian village at that spot and began to raid the village. The chief, Cufcowellax, set out to find and destroy the reptile and save his people. After a lengthy and great battle the chief emerged from the lake the victor. The unusual phenomenon is attributed to this legend. No one has been able to explain the mystery of Spook Hill. To get there from downtown Lake Wales take Central Avenue east to Scenic Highway. Turn north at the traffic light at North Avenue and turn east. Follow the signs to Spook Hill. There is no admission charge. Some of the local bed and breakfast inns offer murder mystery weekends, fashion shows, antique road shows and other tours and events. Contact the Chamber for a list of these events. There is a wealth of things to do here in Lake Wales. Various golf tournaments are scheduled, one can either participate in sky-diving at the airport or watch the daring jumpers from a safe spot on the ground. Join in on some of the free classes offered by the city including line dancing, guitar lessons and computer classes. Other events throughout the year include bass tournaments, parades, bike rides, street parties, celebrations and live music in area restaurants and lounges. One of the most colorful and unusual celebrations is the annual Mardi Gras Parade and Music Festival in the city's downtown French Quarter. Now in its 17th year, this has become a major social and tourist event, attracting over 60,000 people to a family friendly celebration. Special events take place beginning with the King Cake Party on January 6. The krewes host balls and parties leading up to parade day and culminating with the Krewe of Rex Prince of Wailes Grand Coronation Ball on Fat Tuesday. Parade day activities begin with the Chalet Suzanne Mardi Gras Breakfast, a Festival of Vendors all day downtown, the Vinton E. Davis Music Festival from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. downtown, post-parade parties and music into the evening hours. Learning to SUcceed The small town atmosphere of Lake Wales is what makes newcomers as well as long time residents happy to live in a less hectic place to work and attend school. The Polk County School system provides high quality educational opportunities to children and adults. Teachers who care, parents who are involved and students who work hard to achieve success is a winning combination. The Polk County School system is the eighth largest school district in Florida covering 1,858 square miles. Over 77,000 students from pre-kindergarten through adult school are enrolled. The Lake Wales area is served by five elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, one technical academy, two private parochial schools and one private co-educational residential school. Two colleges, Warner Southern and Webber, offer higher education close to home. Warner Southern College is a Christian liberal arts college and offers 16 Bachelor of Arts degrees. The 325-acre campus is located on beautiful Crooked Lake. Webber College is a private four-year independent college and offers Associate of Science, Bachelor of Science and Master's degrees in business. Polk Community College is in nearby Winter Haven. It offers courses paralleling those of the state university system. It is a two-year institution. Two technical schools, Ridge Technical Center and Traviss Technical Center, are within easy commuting distance. Strong & GRowing The Lake Wales Area Chamber of Commerce, the East Polk Committee of 100, the Central Florida Development Council and the City of Lake Wales work together to meet the needs of both new businesses and the expansion of existing businesses. This is a community that plans for the future and where progress is important to local civic, government and business leaders. A full range of personal and business banking services is available locally. Residential and commercial development is growing with the support from the banking community. Financial institutions are committed to encourage future growth of the area. A number of investment specialists are here to serve the needs of clients with portfolios of stocks, bonds and mutual funds of every type. In Lake Wales the citrus industry generates the major portion of the economy and employs many people in its various phases of operation. One fifth of the area's largest employers are involved in citrus. Construction is underway on the City of Lake Wales 164-acre business park. The Longleaf Business Park located on U.S. Highway 27 South has the potential to expand the city's tax base by $100,000,000 and provide an additional 1,000 higher paying jobs in manufacturing and technology. Increased activity in housing, business and industry development is evident throughout the Lake Wales area. New buildings and housing developments are either under construction or nearing completion. In addition, the Main Street program stimulates economic development while maintaining historic integrity. New businesses are attracted to the downtown area due to continuous upgrading of buildings and streets with new signs, facades, renovation of buildings, construction and nice touches such as awnings and antique style lighting. Lake Wales Main Street, Inc. is involved with city-wide promotions and special events to foster a positive image of the city. There are 26 Advanced Life Support units and three Basic Life Support units. Lake Wales fire fighters are trained in emergency medical services. Modern facilities are available for inpatient and outpatient services, short-term and long-term care. Home health care is provided by several private firms in the county and in-home hospice care is available county wide. Lake Wales Medical Centers, Inc. is a modern facility which offers a wide range of inpatient and outpatient care. Physicians staff the emergency room 24-hours a day. Some of the specialized medical services are CT scans, mammography, arthroscopic surgery, ultrasound, ambulatory surgery, an eight-bed intensive care unit, a renal dialysis unit and telemetry monitoring. An extended care facility makes up part of the complex. Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center also serves the Lake Wales area. It is located a short drive away in Davenport. Lake Wales is served by general practitioners and specialists in private medical practice, a walk-in clinic and three convalescent facilities. Continuing with the goal to enhance quality of life is the city's program to completely renovate old school property at the Hardman Recreational Complex. A restored gymnasium is in use and work is beginning on adjacent property under a $900,000-plus project which will add to the extensive recreational program of the city. Construction is underway on the city's 164-acre Longleaf Business Park on U.S. Highway 27 South. There has been substantial increased activity in housing, business and industrial development during 2000. Fueling facilities at the municipal airport has brought it to a competitive level. The facility is home to the world-renowned sky diving center. Lake Wales city services include the police and fire departments, community services, leisure services, utilities administration and billing, public services, building permits and inspections, development services, special projects, economic development, purchasing and contracts administration, city clerk, the museum, the library, the cemetery and the airport.
