Lake County Schools operates 48 campuses throughout the county (nine of which are in Leesburg) to serve 35,500 students. The district also operates seven charter schools, plus two special needs facilities.

Education in Leesburg Florida

The district’s newest facility, Leesburg Elementary School, opened this August to some 700 students at the South Street campus adjacent to Oak Park Middle School. Just this past summer, several smaller, historic Leesburg elementary schools were closed by the school district to serve students more efficiently in newer expanded facilities. Some of the children who formerly attended the closed schools will move to Beverly Shores and Fruitland Park elementary schools, which have enjoyed significant expansion and renovation to improve the facilities for students. The closed schools, including Skeen, Rimes and Dabney elementary schools, were not abandoned, but have emerged as significant elements of a master plan to better serve the community’s educational needs.

The former Rimes Elementary School campus has transformed into the state’s first early childhood and family literacy facility, and has been hailed by state leaders as a model for emerging mandated universal pre-kindergarten programs. The former Skeen Elementary School has been merged into the adjacent Leesburg High School campus to provide expansion opportunities to a school facility restricted by its urban location but required to provide services to a growing service area. The former Dabney Elementary School property will be utilized by the City of Leesburg to provide community services for residents.

Leesburg High School

Other Leesburg area school sites have enjoyed extensive recent renovations and additions. Leesburg High School is enjoying a renaissance and re-birth of its physical campus (highly visible from its location on U.S. Highway 27) and to the design of its student curriculum. Leesburg High recently earned a significant grant reward to intangibly re-design the school into separate “houses” to offer students career tracks in their studies. The concept of a school within a school offers smaller learning environments for students, plus directs their learning into areas of interest based on their personal interests and abilities. Leesburg High School teachers and administrators have revitalized the school’s curriculum to establish an atmosphere most conducive to learning. Leesburg High School students can also earn college credit through dual enrollment with Lake Sumter Community College.

Baseball

Leesburg’s two middle schools, which serve students in sixth through eighth grades, have also recently received extensive improvements. Carver and Oak Park middle schools are both undergoing significant campus improvements to better serve Leesburg families.

In addition to those facilities, Lake County Schools offers high quality vocational and technical training opportunities at the Lake Technical Center in Eustis in such high demand careers as healthcare, cosmetology, technology, drafting, food service, business and industry support services. The Institute of Public Safety also trains firefighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency medical technicians.
