Chamber Letter

It’s very exciting! For those of us who live here full time – we almost haven’t noticed the changes! But for our large community that winters here, they see the changes each year as they return to their Leesburg family. And, for our visitors that have yet to meet our charming downtown, our spectacular lakes, our quaint shops and delicious restaurants, we can’t wait to meet you and show off our town!

‘Cause, baby, look at us now! It was only a short couple of decades ago, and Leesburg was an orange orchard. But some harsh years of weather mandated changes. So what did the citizens of Leesburg do? We reinvented ourselves.

Today, Leesburg boasts LakeXpress (our transit system), a wooden bat team (the Lightning, the winner of the Florida Collegiate Summer League Championship), a charming, yet bustling downtown filled with shops and great restaurants, Lake Square Mall that is being transformed, U.S. 441 is a beautiful gateway into the city, lakes that are teeming with fish and beautiful boats skimming the light waves that our balmy breezes bring. And, if all that wasn’t enough to get our attention, we have an incredible international airport!

The airport has become the jewel of Leesburg and Lake County. It’s exciting, it’s growing and it’s put Leesburg on the map! How exciting that folks will shortly be able to fly into Leesburg from perhaps Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Flights from England, Germany and all over Europe land here weekly! There are companies with offices at the airport that employ hundreds of people! We have a company that is the only private company in the world that has Black Hawks! These Black Hawks go all over Florida and wherever they are needed to help put out massive fires and rescue lives.

There are several private shuttle companies at the airport. Call them to get where you want to go quickly and get home quickly! The airport is a very important part of Leesburg. It’s how tourists can visit us painlessly! It gives businesses an alternative to getting their employees where they need to go, easily. The airport is a major catalyst for our economic growth. Our airport will bring businesses to us! Wow!

The Leesburg Partnership, A Florida Mainstreet Company, brings us the extraordinary, unbelievable Bikefest! Hundreds of thousands of folks roar into Leesburg each April for fun-packed days to give honor and reverence to the motorcycle! A lot of those folks roared in – on their planes. The airport was packed! Next year a lot more people are likely going to come by air because of our newly extended runway.

The airport has made a difference in Leesburg, and baby, we haven’t seen nothin’ yet!

Our fabulous new library is a source of pride for us all. It’s beautiful, full of books and most importantly it’s being used. Growing communities that make a difference understand there are certain fundamentals they must have to be successful: the opportunity for higher education (Lake Sumter Community College), an airport (Leesburg International Airport), a complete library, an arts and cultural center (Leesburg Center for the Arts), transit system (LakeXpress), a strong chamber (Leesburg Area Chamber of Commerce) and of course, sports (the Lightning)!

Baby, look at us now! We’ve come along way from the orange orchards. And, yet, we have still maintained our charming small-town look and feel! Please take a look through this book – to see what you’ve missed – and what is waiting for you!
