South Lake County is scattered with hundreds of pristine lakes and a scenic, hilly landscape that provide an unusual setting in the Sunshine State. They also make it a Mecca for an active outdoor lifestyle.
One of the area’s natural gems is Lake Louisa State Park, a 4,500 acre park known for its six beautiful lakes, hills, and picturesque landscapes. Water enthusiasts enjoy canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Equestrians ride more than 15 miles of horse trails. For hikers and backpackers, the park has over 20 miles of hiking trails with excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. One of its lakes has a fishing pier, canoe/kayak launch, and a picnic pavilion. Recently built cabins offer modern accommodations for overnight visitors.
The 5.5-mile Lake Minneola Scenic Trail in Clermont boasts the highest elevations of any rails-to-trails project in the state, but perhaps not for long. Lake County broke ground on a new four-mile South Lake Trail. The majority of the trail will be constructed on an old railroad bed that lies between the cities of Clermont and Winter Garden.
Nature lovers can further indulge their passion for the outdoors by making a trip to Ocala National Forest, just an hour away in upper Lake County. It spans more than 450,000 acres and is home to hundreds of varieties of birds and animals. The forest also offers swimming, camping, picnicking, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding and more.
If it is a man-made marvel you wish to see, there is the Florida Citrus tower in Clermont, a tourist icon that stands 226-feet tall and is a monument to Central Florida’s famed citrus industry and subtropical groves.
In addition, South Lake’s communities have local parks and recreation departments that keep their residents active with plenty of things to do.
The long list of things-to-do includes outdoor festivals, youth sports leagues, triathlons, and a myriad of educational classes. There are playgrounds, beaches and boardwalks galore.
Whether it’s a stunning sunset over the lake, catching sight of a bird in flight or other wildlife, even the thrill of skiing in the foamy wake of a boat, there is plenty to do in South Lake County.
