Unless it’s the sight of a hole in one, nothing looks prettier to a golfer’s eye than a stretch of green fairway. Those fairways, along with scenic views and a sunny year-round climate, create an ideal setting for golf in South Lake County.
If golfing is the way to relax and unwind, then South Lake County would be paradise here on earth. More than 10 courses boast their own unique character through designs by renowned golf course architects. They present challenges appreciated by experienced golfers and novices alike.
One of the busier public courses is Sanctuary Ridge, formerly Diamond Players Club, a semi-private course that has earned the title of “Florida’s Mountain Golf Course.” With 190 feet of overall elevation change, it is the highest elevated course in the state.
One of the oldest courses is Green Valley Country Club, designed in 1967 by Lloyd Clifton. Well-manicured, rolling fairways and panoramic views of the countryside make it one of the most visually appealing courses in the state.
The semi-private, 18-hole Legends Golf & Country Club was designed by Clifton, Ezell & Clifton in 2001. It has rolling fairways; well-bunkered greens, a multitude of dogleg holes, but the most memorable features are the challenging par 3’s.
Mission Inn Resort & Club nestled in quaint Howey-In-The-Hills offers two courses, El Campeon and Las Colinas, both acknowledged by leading golf magazines as being outstanding regulation courses. The resort also offers the Bill Skelley School of Golf, tennis, exquisite meeting facilities and fine dining.
An ideal place to perfect accuracy, Kings Ridge Golf Club is a semi-private course in an active adult community in Clermont. It offers two courses, with its signature hole being the 18th, a 339-yard, par 4.
Fast greens and tree-lined fairways add to the appeal of Palisades Golf Course. The 18-hole course opened in 1990 and has received a four-star rating from “Golf Digest.”
