South Bay Hospital

Within the community is South Bay Hospital, a fully accredited 112-bed facility that serves as an acute-care center with intensive and cardiac care and provides 24-hour emergency room and physical referral services. The extensive list of specialty services ranges from angiographies, hospice and neurosurgery to skilled-nursing beds and oncology treatment. Compassionate care is provided by specially trained professionals.
South Bay Hospital works to keep pace with the community’s needs and is on the frontier of new technology in areas such as orthopedic joint replacement. This hospital can perform minimally invasive hip replacement, one of only two hospitals in Hillsborough County with this capability. The recently opened Outpatient Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Center provides numerous services, including MRI, Digital Mammography, CT scan, physical therapy, occupational and speech therapies, pulmonary therapy, and cardiac rehabilitation.
South Bay Hospital is also known for its many volunteers who play a vital role in helping provide high-quality, cost-effective healthcare. At any given time, one will see volunteers helping with registration at the Diagnostic Center, assisting the dietary staff with patient menus, filing and answering phones in the laboratory offices, providing directions for outpatients, and staffing the hospital’s gift shop.
Tampa General Hospital

Tampa General Hospital is one of the area’s largest facilities with 818 acute-care beds, 59 rehabilitation beds and 36 surgical suites. Located in Tampa, the hospital serves a 12-county region in west-central Florida and is the primary teaching hospital for the University of South Florida College of Medicine. Its transplant program is nationally ranked and is one of the busiest transplant centers in the world. Tampa General is also renowned for its successful treatment of stroke victims and stroke research.
The approximately 3,000 healthcare employees are dedicated to adhering to the hospital’s mission statement, which states the hospital’s commitment to providing the residents of west-central Florida with excellent and compassionate healthcare.
Lakewood Ranch Medical Center

One of our newest members, Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, is located in Bradenton. This facility opened September 1, 2004, and it offers 120 licensed beds and 185,000 square feet of space located on a 30-acre medical campus. The center has two adjacent medical office buildings with more than 300 physicians on staff. Lakewood Ranch Medical Center is owned and operated by Universal Health Services, Inc.
Lakewood Ranch Medical Center also offers the Women’s Center, which achieved high reliability unit (HRU) designation. The Women’s Center provides 12 labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) suites and six gynecological beds; two operating rooms and a two-bed post anesthesia care unit (PACU); four exam/triage rooms; a Level I nursery with more than 20 pediatricians on staff; 24/7 anesthesia in-house; and 24/7 neonatology coverage. The average nursing experience in Labor & Delivery is 10-15 years with 100 percent certification in fetal monitoring by the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). In addition, the new Breast Health Center opened in June 2007. It is a state-of-the-art facility featuring digital mammography, the MultiCare Platinum digital stereotactic breast biopsy system, and Biolucent single-use foam Mamopads for every patient. The Breast Health Center team consists of registered radiology technologists certified in mammography with more than eight years experience.
Manatee Memorial Hospital
The 319-bed Manatee Memorial Hospital has grown alongside the community for the last 55-plus years, recently undergoing a major construction project that added a new 165,000-square-foot patient tower. Nearly doubling the size of the original facility, Manatee Memorial Hospital is now capable of offering increased health services and programs in an innovative, high-tech environment. The range of medical areas provided through the hospital is extensive and includes such centers of excellence as the Breast Care Center, the Heart Center, the modern Pediatric Center, the Surgery Center, the Outpatient Radiology Center and the Family BirthPlace. Patients can also access services such as surgical weight loss, behavioral health, cancer/ oncology, stroke/cardiovascular care, emergency medicine, rehabilitation, respiratory care, and women’s health, along with a wealth of excellent community events, classes, seminars and support groups.
Manatee Memorial Hospital earned full accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations in 2008 and, more recently, garnered the American Stroke Association’s Gold Performance Achievement Award in the Get With The Guidelines Program in 2009.
The Bridges
Under construction on this 24-acre, state-of-the-art Brandon campus are a 101-bed assisted-living facility and memory unit, independent-living condos for rent or purchase, and free-standing homes for sale that you can customize to your heart’s content. A focal point of the Bridges is the elegant clubhouse with executive dining, a heated inside/outside pool, a fitness center, a nature pond, and activity rooms.
In addition to these outstanding services, these hospitals host numerous educational programs, support groups and special events for the community.
There are numerous hospitals and medical centers in Sun City Center or within a short drive of it, including St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, USF Medical Center in Tampa, James A. Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, Blake Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Bay Pines Veterans Hospital in St. Petersburg and Sunhill Medical Center in Sun City Center. There are many other excellent medical facilities available (including the Community Dialysis Center in Sun City Center) and an abundance of physicians, with specialties ranging from oncology and cardiology to dentistry, optometry and ophthalmology.
Residents have access to a number of mental health support groups in Sun City Center, and they will find support for grief, domestic abuse, hospice, respite care and more. The retired and working mental health professionals who make up the Mental Health Advocates of Sun City Center organization work in conjunction with family members and others in the community to raise the level of awareness and understanding of mental health in the senior population.
