Within Sun City Center, South Bay Hospital is a fully accredited 112-bed facility that serves as a care center that provides a 24-hour emergency room and physician referral services. The list of specialty services ranges from angiographies, hospice and neurosurgery to skilled nursing beds and oncology treatment. Compassionate care is provided by specially trained professionals. South Bay Hospital works to keep pace with the community’s needs and is on the frontier of new technology in areas such as orthopedic joint replacement. This hospital can perform minimally invasive hip replacement, one of only two hospitals in Hills-borough County with this capability. A recently opened Outpatient Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Center provides numerous services, including MRI, Mammography, CAT scan, physical therapy, occupational and speech therapies, pulmonary therapy, and cardiac rehabilitation.
South Bay Hospital’s volunteers play a role in helping to provide high quality, cost effective healthcare. At any given time, one will see volunteers helping with registration at the Diagnostic Center, assisting the dietary staff with patient menus, filing and answering phones in the laboratory offices, providing directions for outpatients, and staffing the hospital’s gift shop.
There are numerous other hospitals and medical centers within a short drive from Sun City Center, including St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, USF Medical Center in Tampa, the Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, James A. Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, Blake Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Bay Pines Veterans Hospital in St. Petersburg, and the Sunhill Medical Center in Sun City Center.
Tampa General Hospital is one of the largest facilities with 818 acute care beds, 59 rehabilitation beds and 36 surgical suites - including one dedicated trauma room, one burn, six cardiac, four obstetric and eight outpatient.
Located in Tampa, the hospital serves a 12-county region in West Central Florida and is the primary teaching hospital for the University of South Florida College of Medicine. Its transplant program is nationally ranked, and is one of the busiest transplant centers in the world. Tampa General is also renowned for its successful treatment of stroke victims and stroke research.
The approximate 3,000 healthcare employees are dedicated to adhering to the hospital’s mission statement, which states the hospital’s commitment to providing the residents of West Central Florida with excellent and compassionate healthcare.
During the summer of 2003, Tampa General began offering a radiation treatment that aids in the prevention of the re-narrowing of stinted arteries. The hospital also began offering a simple, non-invasive procedure called capsule endoscopes gastro intestinal in 2003. This procedure allows many patients to avoid the discomfort and expense of surgery.
Tampa General is also a satellite location for the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute. The National Cancer Institute has designated the Moffitt Center as a comprehensive cancer care center, the highest level of recognition that can be bestowed upon such a facility. The Moffitt Center, which is affiliated with nearly a dozen medical centers and hospitals in Florida, has more than 280 physicians and 600 researchers. Inpatient admissions total more than 6,000 per year, and there are more than 171,000 outpatient visits per year.
In June 2005, Tampa General became one of the few hospitals in the country to provide online viewing of surgical procedures in real time.
In addition to these outstanding services, the hospital hosts numerous education programs, support groups and special events for the community.
There are many other excellent medical facilities available (including the Community Dialysis Center in Sun City Center) and an abundance of physicians, with specialties ranging from oncology and cardiology to dentistry, optometry and ophthalmology.
Residents have access to a number of mental health support groups in Sun City Center, and will find support for grief, domestic abuse, hospice, respite care and more. The retired and working mental health professionals who make up the Mental Health Advocates of Sun City Center organization work in conjunction with family members and others in the community to raise the level of awareness and understanding of mental health in the senior population.
