Harris County is ideally situated close to major metropolitan areas, while retaining its scenic rural character. It is in close proximity to the Interstate Highway System (I-85 via I-185) and U.S. Highway 27, and numerous state highways run through the county. Georgia Southwestern Railroad provides local rail service through Harris County. Interstate and inter/intrastate motor freight carrier service is also available. The nearest navigable river is the Chattahoochee, which forms the western boundary of the county. The nearest public barge dock is located 20 miles to the south in Columbus, and the nearest seaports are in Savannah, 252 miles to the east, and Panama City, Florida, 169 miles to the south. Air travel is available at commercial airports in Columbus, 20 miles south, and at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, 60 miles north. Private air travel is available at the Harris County Airport with a 5,000-foot runway available.
