With the rapid growth of Harris County’s population, the Harris
County Recreation Department is hard at work to provide recreation opportunities
for the children of the county.
The department provides programs for over 2,000 children (ages 4-18) with
the help of nearly 300 volunteers. Programs include Little League Baseball/Softball,
Babe Ruth Baseball (for teenage boys), football, cheerleading, basketball
and soccer.
Activities are held at several beautiful locations, including Charles
Moultrie Park (a 29-acre baseball/softball complex), the 34-acre Harris
County Soccer Complex, Pine Mountain Valley Park, the Carver Resource
Center and E.C. Pate Park.
In addition, construction has begun on a 4.5 mile paved bicycle/walking
trail that will begin in Hamilton and wind around and through the Soccer
Complex area. E.C. Pate Park in Cataula is being built in phases. Phase
I of the 100-acre facility has five lighted baseball/softball fields and
a 3,400-square foot fieldhouse and meeting facility. Phase II includes
the construction of a walking path, basketball courts, tennis courts and
practice fields for soccer and football.
Summer satellite programs for the Boys and Girls Club of Columbus, Georgia
and Phenix City, Alabama are held at the Carver Resource Center in Hamilton,
and plans are under way for adult programs (including volleyball, softball
and basketball).
