Serving 7,200 students throughout Polk County, the Polk School District prides itself on offering an outstanding learning environment. The public school system is currently comprised of 10 schools, all equipped with modern technology and access to computers and the Internet. The system is growing quickly, with a new middle school on the west and a new high school on the east recently established. Construction began on a new middle school on the east in late 2006, and a new elementary school is slated to begin construction in 2007. The school district is governed by a nine-member Board of Education, named as a Standards Board (one of 105 boards of education in the state to receive this recognition), and more recently as a Board of Distinction by the Georgia School Boards Association (one of 35 boards designated with this title).

For those in search of alternative schooling options, three exemplary private schools are situated in and near the county’s communities. The Vineyard Harvester Academy and the Lundy Christian Academy are both located in Cedartown, offering Christian-based education to those enrolled. Neighboring Rome is home to the esteemed Darlington School, an independent, college-preparatory school providing day education to students in pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as boarding options for high school students.

Within approximately 50 miles of the county, students are easily able to access six higher learning facilities, offering everything from educational and vocational training to a variety of certificates and associate’s, bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral degrees. The institutions include the Coosa Valley Technical College in Rockmart, Georgia Highlands College, Berry College and Shorter College in nearby Floyd County, the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, nearly 32-miles south of Polk County, and Kennesaw State University, positioned 50 miles away in Kennesaw.
