The community was named after Levi Stockbridge, a highly required a name. In 1881, the Southern Railroad was completed between Atlanta and Macon, on a route that passed through Old Stockbridge. Anticipating huge profits, landowners raised the price of their land to the point that the railroad stopped looking for a place to construct a station. It was not until 1882, when two Atlantans bought land a mile south of Concord Methodist Church, that the railroad found a location for its depot. The two speculators offered lots at reasonable prices, attracted and obtained a rail station, and began the history of present day Stockbridge. The community was incorporated as a town in 1895 and was chartered as a city in 1920.
