The telling of the history of a community stirs the imagination, painting mental pictures of rugged pioneers and people of spirit and daring. Stockbridge is no exception.

In 1829, Concord Methodist Church was established and a thriving settlement developed around it. In 1847, the community applied for a post office that required a name. The community was named after Levi Stockbridge, a highly required a name. In 1881, the Southern Railroad was completed between Atlanta and Macon, on a route that passed through Old Stockbridge. Anticipating huge profits, landowners raised the price of their land to the point that the railroad stopped looking for a place to construct a station.

It was not until 1882, when two Atlantans bought land a mile south of Concord Methodist Church, that the railroad found a location for its depot. The two speculators offered lots at reasonable prices, attracted and obtained a rail station, and began the history of present day Stockbridge. The community was incorporated as a town in 1895 and was chartered as a city in 1920.

You have a choice of three delightful places to stay, Shoney’s Inn and Amerihost Inn both close to shopping, and the European charm of the Inn at Eagle’s Landing, with several other hotels and motels located in the Stockbridge area.

Excellent shopping is available along North Henry Boulevard (Route 23) and on Route 138. You’ll find a full array of stores, shops, and boutiques, including well-known discount department and large food stores. Several regional shopping malls are within 16 to 20 miles of Stockbridge; on the southern fringe of Atlanta, and the famed Atlanta Underground is just 22 miles away.

Stockbridge boasts about 40 restaurants whose menus delight everyone who enjoys good food. They range from popular fast food, family style, and ethnic and gourmet restaurants.

Henry Medical Center on Eagle’s Landing Parkway is a 124-bed hospital, well equipped to perform a wide range of medical services. Its 24-hour emergency department is a Level III Trauma Center and has recently expanded to accommodate the booming growth of the community.

Among the hospital’s many medical services are women and children’s care; neonatal intensive care; pediatrics, radiology with ultrasound, CT scan, and MRI scanner; breast care; nuclear medicine; ambulatory surgery; surgery; physical therapy; EEG and EKG labs; respiratory therapy; and a critical and progress care unit.

Henry Medical Center has more than 350 physicians on staff.

Whether you relish heart-pounding excitement or relaxation in the midst of natural beauty, you’ll enjoy your visit to Stockbridge.

One thing is certain. You’ll hear lots of golf talk and if you’re a golfer your ears will perk up. Stockbridge and Henry County offer some of the finest golf available in the entire Atlanta area, with two world-class country clubs and two topnotch public courses. Eagle’s Landing Country Club, in Stockbridge, has an 18-hole course designed by Tom Fazio and is open year around. It’s the setting for the annual Ladies PGA Tournament.

The nearby Atlanta Motor Speedway provides the roar of speeding car engines and the thrills of NASCAR races. Tours of the facility are offered.

If nature’s beauty attracts you, hike the trails at 617-acre Panola Mountain State Park, or spend time in Stockbridge’s two municipal parks where you’ll find walking trails, adult swings, tennis courts, grills and picnic tables, playgrounds, and pavilions. One has a fitness center for persons with disabilities. A third park is in development and will be open in late 1999.
