In 1925, Standard Oil heir and Chinquapin Plantation owner John F. “Jack” Archbold gave more than $1 million to build and equip a state-of-the-art hospital as a tribute to his late father and as a gift to his adopted community. When John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital opened its doors eight decades ago, it was touted as the most modern and best equipped general hospital in the world.

The 100-bed regional hospital that became the 800-bed Archbold Medical Center of today was a marvel of its time. Today, Archbold Memorial Hospital anchors a regional not-for-profit healthcare delivery system that includes five hospitals, four nursing homes, two home health agencies, a comprehensive cancer care program, a full service rehabilitation center, a behavioral and substance abuse care facility, and a network of clinics and centers that keep high quality, comprehensive healthcare readily available across the region.

Thanks to that commitment, patients today can expect the latest advances in healthcare.

Perhaps most notable among recent advances is the addition of cutting edge technology in the field of neurosurgery, a Leksell Gamma Knife at the Lewis Hall Singletary Oncology Center. This incredible procedure allows surgeons to perform non-evasive surgery on brain tumors, lesions and vascular malformations of the brain without a scalpel and without the usual risks of traditional brain surgery. Archbold’s Gamma Knife was the 68th in the country – only the third in Georgia – and represented a major investment to bring this lifesaving surgical miracle to the region for the first time.

Archbold offers the latest advances in diagnostics including PET scanning (scarce in rural areas) and advanced CT and MRI scanning. Fully accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, Archbold also serves as the state’s designed trauma center for the entire south Georgia region, the only such facility south of Macon. A recent expansion at Archbold added more than 90,000-square feet of patient care space at its main campus and allow for significant improvements in its cardiac and vascular screening, diagnostic and treatment services, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program and inpatient nephrology unit.

Thomas County boasts more than 120 excellent physicians in 36 separate medical specialties, assuring its citizens of experienced care in close proximity. Healthcare is a major economic engine in virtually any community, but Thomas County’s healthcare delivery system packs a major financial punch. Not only does the Archbold system provide some 2,500 jobs in the area, but recent studies also indicate a regional economic impact of more than $425 million is generated by the health system annually.
