Location and Transportation
Located in southeastern Idaho at the intersection of Interstate Highways 15 and 86, Pocatello is the county seat of Bannock County. It is 60 minutes from Interstate 84 and 160 miles north of Salt Lake City. With a combined population of approximately 70,000, it is Idaho’s second largest urban area.
Known as “the Gate City” due to its location at a natural break in the mountains, Pocatello has been a major transportation hub since the days of the Oregon Trail. The city contains one of the largest railway classification yards in the West, and has an active partner in commercial rail service in the Union Pacific Railroad.
With destinations such as Yellowstone National Park, Bridger-Teton National Forest, Jackson Hole and Sun Valley all less than three hours away, Pocatello is a convenient stop for thousands of travelers.
Two commercial airlines serve the area. Pocatello Regional Transit provides bus service within the city.
