– Mission of the Addison Public Library
The concept for instituting a much-needed public library in the Village of Addison came to fruition in 1958, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Kiwanis Club of Addison. A referendum for establishing a tax-supported library was passed by great majority on July 7, 1962, shortly after the Addison Village Board gave permission to remodel two rooms located in the Municipal Building for library use.
The Addison Public Library officially opened on October 15, 1962, and soon joined 10 other local libraries to create the DuPage Library System in April 1966.
As the population of Addison experienced tremendous growth, the library quickly outgrew its facility in the Municipal Building. After a second referendum attempt (and a final approval), construction of the new library structure commenced in August 1967. The completed Addison Public Library opened its doors on October 14, 1968.
After many enhancements over the years, the Addison Public Library has continued to meet the growing educational, recreational and cultural needs of the community. Today, the nearly 27,500-square-foot facility houses an extensive collection of books, movies, music, magazines, newspapers and electronic resources. Complementing the collection is a full range of programming for children through adults. A membership of approximately 24,000 takes advantage of book discussions, reading programs, homework help, storytimes, movie presentations and computer classes—among further programming opportunities.
