In addition to all of their regular programming, the Barrington Park District also works together with many area businesses on a variety of special projects and events. The park district has partnered up for a range of entertainment, health and fitness programming. Carla Smothers is the superintendent of recreation for the Barrington Park District, and she points out that they make every effort to use local food vendors for their concessions and try to team up with other Barrington-area organizations whenever possible so that they are better able to bring new and unique programs to the residents in the area. Here are some highlights.
Entertainment
The Barrington Park District has a core group of popular entertainment events that are offered to residents annually. Here are some fun favorites that have been made possible by the sponsorship of Barrington area businesses.
Summer Concert Series
The summer concert series is held in the Citizen’s Park Amphitheater, and it is a wonderful example of how local businesses work together with the park district to sponsor community events. Harris Bank Barrington is supporting this enjoyable Wednesday evening out, which features a variety of music for all ages throughout the summer season.
Caribbean Night
In its 12th year, Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital is the sponsor of one of the park district’s most popular summer events— Caribbean Night. Held at the Aqualusion Family Aquatic Center, there are always a bunch of great activities to participate in, such as face painting, sand art and volleyball. Live music rounds out the “tropical” scene and lends some wonderful atmosphere.
Big Trucks

Big Trucks is another annual entertainment offering that is sponsored by a Barrington area business—Barrington Bank & Trust. This event is held at Ron Beese Park and features a display of 25 large trucks, ranging from fire engines to dump trucks. Big wheel races, food and live music make this a memorable event that the whole family can enjoy.
Health
Area hospitals and businesses have also partnered with the Barrington Park District for a variety of health-related programs and screenings. Most of these initiatives are channeled through the Fitness Center. Although these programs are always changing, here are some examples of some things that have been offered:
Blood pressure screenings were given in honor of National Blood Pressure Month. The screenings took place on six different days throughout the spring and summer. In addition, Good Shepherd Hospital sponsored a body fat analysis for Fitness Center members, which was also available to the public for a nominal charge.
Jason Van Ness, D.C., and the staff of Van Ness Chiropractic offered their expertise to the community by providing computerized spine scans and “mini-massages” at no cost. They also spent time talking with residents about some common spinal issues that are related to lifestyle activities such as golf and gardening.
Fitness
Fitness Center Discounts
The park district has reached out to area businesses by giving a corporate discount to people who are employed in the Barrington area but do not live there. Those who bring in a check stub or a confirmation of employment on company letterhead are eligible for in-district prices. Fitness Center Supervisor Jodi Paz says that a number of people in the area take advantage of this perk. “We have people who work in the area that come in on their lunch hour and after work to use the center,” she says.
Athletic Fitness Clinic
Two Barrington area businesses, Dick Pond Athletics and AthletiCo, teamed up to do an athletic fitness clinic in Langendorf Park. They spent time talking with people about things such as core strength, proper shoe selection, stretching and injury prevention. These services were offered to the public at no charge.
Although the Barrington Park District already offers a wide-range of quality programming, the partnership of many Barrington area businesses has made many more events, screenings and seminars possible throughout the years. These partnerships provide the park district with the ability to offer additional programs that contribute to both the health and enjoyment of the community members.
