Batavia Government

The City of Batavia uses a mayor-council form of government with an appointed city administrator to oversee day-to-day functions. Batavia’s 25,000 plus residents are lucky to have an effective and efficient local government that cares about fulfilling the needs of its citizens. A mayor and fourteen council members are elected at-large and work in concert with the city clerk, and more than 200 full and part-time employees.

City government is located in the historic stone building that was once home to the Appleton Manufacturing Company. Located in the center of the city off of the Fox River, the renovated building also serves as the home of the Police Department and a community theatre.

The mission of Batavia’s local government is to both work toward and maintain the highest standards of health, safety and welfare for those who live and work within the city limits. The city’s continued growth in the residential and business sector reflects high satisfaction amongst the city’s customers for delivered services.

Batavia places a high value on maintaining a “small- town feel” while providing up-to-date, modern services. Involved in many strategic partnerships with public and private entities, Batavia continues to develop relationships that will benefit the town. The famed Batavia Riverwalk is one result of such efforts. Another result of these cooperative efforts is the many development incentives created for growing commercial areas such as bustling Randall Road.

Security and safety are among the city government’s primary concerns. A centrally-located police department with 42 sworn officers, five auxiliary police, and 10 civilian personnel serves the local community. The police department is actively involved in community prevention programs including D.A.R.E., Operation Snowball, a Gang Intervention Unit, and the Special Assignment Team that works as problem- solvers in the community policing program. These programs, among others, show the dedication of local police to not only protect but to educate and prevent crime from intruding on the lives of Batavia’s residents.

Other safety concerns are met by Batavia’s Fire Department with two fire stations manned by 24 full-time and 30 paid on-call firefighters, and 12 paramedics ready to respond to any emergency. In line with the city’s philosophy, the Fire Department regularly conducts educational and prevention programs. Working with local schools and businesses, the department works diligently to keep the community safe.

Another advantage to living and working in Batavia lies in their utility programs. Batavia owns and operates its own electric company, which features rates that are often significantly less than other communities, making the city an even more attractive location. Other operations such as public works, engineering and community development all take great pride in planning, constructing and maintaining a city infrastructure that allows its users to attend to daily life with a minimum of interruption while maintaining the physical atmosphere that has drawn many here for so many years.

The government of the City of Batavia, with a clear notion of its small-town heritage and an equally clear vision of the exciting future, operates with the well-being of all of its citizens in mind.
