Batavia Education

students

Knowledge is the key to success; Batavia residents understand this philoso phy and take it to heart. From its beginnings, the city has placed a high value on education. The first school was conceived a brief seven months after the first settlers moved in.

Batavia School District 101 serves the city with an annual enrollment of more than 6,000 students. One high school, one middle school, and six elementary schools serve an area of close to 20 square miles that encompasses the city and areas to the south, east and west. More than 80 percent of high school graduates continue their education at the college and university level.

Students consistently score higher than the national average on basic skills; many students score above the national average in all areas including reading, language, math and science. In elementary and middle school, over 85% of students meet state standards in reading and 95% meet the mathematics standards. Batavia High School students rank second in the county with an average ACT score of 22.2. High achievement scores is one of many reasons the Batavia School District is ranked as one of the best in the state of Illinois.

Batavia’s six elementary schools place a heavy emphasis on the basics. A core curriculum of reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies forms the foundation for every child’s education. Additional programs available to the students include computer literacy, art, music, foreign language and physical education.

Rotolo Middle School and Batavia High School serve the educational needs of older students. Both schools place emphasis on a strong foundation of language arts, math and science while providing many opportunities for vocational experiences and extracurricular involvement.

Courses of study are available in over 20 fields with classes held both on campus and at satellite locations. In addition to the local school district, there are also many private facilities in the area’s alternative educational system. A highly regarded Montessori School (serving students from 2-years of age through eighth grade) lies within the city limits. Several churches in the area offer faith-based preschool and elementary education. Three Catholic and one Christian high school are located in nearby Aurora. Additionally, there are several preschools and daycare centers available to serve the needs of working parents.
