ARMY TRAIL ROAD CORRIDOR
Bloomingdale Court Shopping Center: Located on the south side of Army Trail Road, between Schmale Road on the east, and Knollwood Drive on the west, this shopping center is owned and managed by Simon Properties and contains over 600,000 square feet of gross leaseable area. It is home to many nationally recognized big box retailers, including Circuit City, Best Buy, Dicks Sporting Goods, TJ Maxx, Old Navy, and Jo-Ann’s, in addition to Wal-Mart. Outlots along Army Trail Road contain a variety of family style dining establishments, including Chili’s, Friday’s, Lone Star, Applebees, and Oberweis, along with CitiBank and Fifth Third Bank. The eastern section of this center has undergone a renaissance of sorts within the past few years with the addition of several restaurants and the expanded JoAnn’s.
Bloomingdale Square: This shopping center contains about 75,300 square feet, and is adjacent to the Bloomingdale Court Shopping Center on the south side of Army Trail Road to the west. Anchors include Pier I Imports and Michael’s. A recently added Chipotle, with its outdoor patio, draws substantial traffic into this area.
WEST ARMY TRAIL ROAD
Costco Wholesale Inc. opened one of its first stores in the region at Army Trail Road and Madsen Drive, with 150,000 square feet of retail space. In 2006, Staples opened their free-standing office supply store on an adjacent outlot, with about 20,000 square feet. There is additional undeveloped land in this vicinity that also offers retail potential.
GARY AVENUE CORRIDOR
North of Schick Road: The opening of a Meijer department store in 2004, with 220,000 square feet, constitutes a significant addition to the Village’s retail inventory. Several outlots await development, along with their existing freestanding service station and convenience store.
South of Schick Road: Stratford Crossing is located on the west side of Gary, between Schick Road on the north and Camden Drive on the south. Under new ownership since 2006, Stratford Crossing is the Village’s third largest retail concentration with about 334,000 square feet of leaseable area. Prominent anchors include Dominick’s, which is undergoing a transformation into a more upscale “lifestyle” format, Kmart, and Outback.
South of Camden Drive: A Barnes and Noble anchors a smaller retail concentration. Adjacent to Barnes and Noble to the south is a Lifetime Fitness Center with nearly 90,000 square feet of space in a two-story building on about 15 acres.
LAKE STREET CORRIDOR
South of Lake Street: Its intersection with Springfield Drive serves as the northwestern gateway into the Village. It is flanked on the west corner by an attractive freestanding Ace Hardware, completed in 2004 with 24,000 square feet, and on the east corner by Walgreens.
Springbrook Mall: Centrally located in the Village, on the south side of Lake Street, the mall, known as the Ridge and Lake Street Redevelopment Project Area, received Tax Increment Financing approval in March of 1999, pursuant to the powers of the Village under the Illinois Tax Increment Allocation Redevelopment Act. The district contains approximately 24 acres with 186,000 square feet of retail space. Today it is a thriving district with Caputo’s Fresh Market, a popular independently owned full-service supermarket, several eateries, unique retail establishments, and an F.I.M. Store, along with several outlots, including a Chase Bank branch facility and Portillo’s. On the north side of Lake Street is Circle Center, home to a variety of small retail spaces, plus Rosati’s Italian and Abashiri Japanese restaurants. The center is flanked by Dunkin’ Donuts on the west and Harris Bank on the east. There remains some available retail space fronting Lake Street which is ideal for a third restaurant on that site.x
