Although it is known that the Potawatomie Indians once lived in the Buffalo Grove area, the first recorded history begins with the German immigrants from the Alsace-Lorraine region who came to farm this land in the mid 1840s. Descendants of these early settlers remain in the area today. The present St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Village's most prominent landmark, was built by the families of these early settlers in 1899.
Throughout the early 1900s, Buffalo Grove was a dairy farming community supplying the Chicago area with fresh dairy products. Although the first concrete road (Dundee Road) was built around 1930, the residential development of the Village did not begin until the late 1950s. On March 7, 1958, the Village of Buffalo Grove, consisting of 42 homes and 164 people, was incorporated. From a population of 670 in 1960, Buffalo Grove has since grown to a current population of nearly 44,000.
Today, Buffalo Grove is one of the finest communities in Illinois with a perfect blend of residential, retail and business. Spread throughout the community are over 400 acres of parks featuring playgrounds, sports fields, picnic areas and a dog park. The business parks and office centers maintain Buffalo Grove's country charm with their beautifully landscaped grounds. Its diversified retail community contains over twenty intimate shopping centers offering a wide variety of stores, shops and eating establishments.
The Village of Buffalo Grove is located 29 miles northwest of the City of Chicago in the northern part of suburban Cook County and southwestern part of Lake County. It is primarily a residential suburb. The nearby communities are the Village of Wheeling on the east, the Village of Lincolnshire on the north and northeast, the Village of Long Grove on the northwest, and the Village of Arlington Heights on the south and southwest.
