Buffalo Grove was officially registered as a village with the state of Illinois in 1958, when it was still a small farming community.

Now a bustling, modern community of over 44,000, the Village of Buffalo Grove is about to celebrate its 50th Anniversary, which will culminate at Buffalo Grove Days 2008.

A host of activities are planned to help celebrate this momentous occasion, many of them with—you guessed it—a ‘50s theme!

“What we’re trying to do is plan a full year of celebrations that can be enjoyed by everyone in the community, where people can discover the true mystery about the town they live in,” said Janet Sirabian, Chairperson of the 35-person 50th Anniversary Committee, whose work started two years ago.

To begin the festivities, Buffalo Grove’s past and present elected officials will enjoy a banquet on March 7th to commemorate the official day that Buffalo Grove was entered into Illinois’ records as a village 50 years prior. On March 8th and 9th, a “Mini Open House” will occur at the Village Hall, during which time Buffalo Grove residents can sign an official scroll.

This scroll and a host of additional items will be enclosed in a time capsule and then buried on the Village Hall property during Buffalo Grove Days 2008. In 50 years when the village celebrates its 100th anniversary, residents will open the time capsule, anxiously awaiting the reading of the names and messages on that scroll and wondering what it was like to live “way back then.”

A booklet containing pictures and stories of Buffalo Grove’s history as well as a calendar listing significant dates will be distributed to all residents of Buffalo Grove. Volunteers from local schools, organizations, and the police and fire departments assisted with the compilation of this booklet. Commemorative license plates will be available for purchase, which can be displayed during July, August, and September to show loyalty to Buffalo Grove. Notecards and keychains with the Buffalo Grove indicia are available for a $6 donation as well.

parade

On April 27th, the 50th anniversary festivities will continue with its “open house” format. Attendees can move from one display to another and view the village’s police, fire and public works vehicles. There will also be plenty of food vendors to keep everyone happy. And what kind of festival would it be if there wasn’t the traditional Moon Walk for the children’s enjoyment?

June 21st will be fun for all ages, but it will be especially so for those who grew up in the ‘50s. Buffalo Grove is sponsoring a Car Show during the day, and a Sock Hop with radio icon Dick Biondi working his DJ magic throughout the evening.

Then on August 3rd at Stevenson High School, the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band and BG Singers Encore! group will present a concert featuring music from the ‘50s. An ice cream social will immediately follow.

Buffalo Grove Days will be held from August 28th through September 1st and will feature a ‘50s theme with entertainment acts, fun contests and a parade. The time capsule will be buried on Monday, September 1st as the festivities come to a close.

With all of these fun activities, the centennial committee of 2058 will have a tough act to follow. Congratulations, Buffalo Grove on your 50th Anniversary!
