Founded in 1907, the current-day Jewish Council for Youth Services (JCYS) was initially known as the “Young Men’s Associated Jewish Charities” and later as the “Young Men’s Jewish Council.” The independent, non-profit organization was originally established with the purpose of bringing together young male leaders to assure financial support for a variety of charities and philanthropies. A new direction was successfully attempted in 1914 when the organization chose to serve the youth of struggling Jewish immigrants.
Today, JCYS remains a significant part of the greater Chicagoland area, dedicating its sources to the needs of Jewish children, families and the community at-large through a multitude of programming highlighting learning, recreation and personal growth, as well as the principles of Jewish culture.
Buffalo Grove is home to the JCYS Northwest Family Center, which has been a fixture in the area for nearly a decade. The modern facility, which grants children the opportunity to engage in a variety of programs and activities, features 12 classrooms, three multipurpose rooms, a full-size gymnasium, a dance studio, an atrium and gallery area and a playground.

It is here that both children and their families can access a number of great resources, including:
• Early Childhood Education Programs
• Full- and Part-Day Preschool
• Kindergarten Enrichment Classes
• Before- and After-School Programs
• Sports and Leagues for both children and adults
• Several Youth Programs
• A number of family programs
• Performing Arts programming in Theatre and Dance
What’s more, JCYS offers both day and overnight camps for its youth, ranging from shorter programs lasting one week to longer programs extending over eight weeks. Camp Henry Horner, located in nearby Ingleside, has been a JCYS tradition since the beginning, offering an array of year-round programming for area children, families, youth groups, religious organizations, schools and local businesses.

The camp provides 10 acres of comfortable camping facilities, along with 180 acres spanning Wooster Lake. Campers enjoy a variety of fun activities including water sports, volleyball, tennis, fine arts, horseback riding and cooking, to name a few. In addition to the day and overnight camps available at Camp Henry Horner are programs on teambuilding, outdoor education, a Hot Shots Hoops basketball program and Camp Red Leaf, a special needs summer camp designed for children and adults with developmental disabilities and emotional and behavioral needs.
The Northwest Family Center is also the site of two popular day camps, utilized by hundreds of area youth. Sunflower Day Camp offers campers from 15 months through pre-kindergarten a site for a multitude of great activities, while Horner Grove Day Camp brings the experiences of Camp Henry Horner to Buffalo Grove for campers from pre-kindergarten through 1st grade. Both day camps allow campers to look into a sundry of special interests ranging from nature and sports programming to music, drama and arts and crafts.
