The City of Canton has all of the amenities for the good life. Canton boasts quality educational opportunities for all ages. Local ACT composite scores rank above the average state scores. Spoon River College is a multi-faceted community college offering the first two years of college and pre-professional courses in 30 college majors plus over 30 career and technical programs and continuing education. For other specialized training there is LaMont’s International Beauty Academy and Graham Hospital School of Nursing.

The City of Canton is governed by an Aldermanic form of government with the election every four years of a Mayor, Treasurer, and City Clerk. Eight aldermen are elected to serve four-year terms. The Canton City Council meets in its chambers in the Historic Depot, the first and third Tuesday of every month and the meetings are broadcast over the local Channel 3 cable television station.

The City operates its own water and sewer system. The capacity of the water plant is 4,176,000 gallons per day. Canton Lake and two additional wells provide Canton with a good quality water supply. Canton operates its own wastewater treatment plant with a design capacity of 9,595,000 gallons per day. Canton has the infrastructure that is necessary for a growing community to expand. The City has a full-time police department with 23 commissioned officers, and a full-time fire department with 16 full-time firefighters, a rescue vehicle and firefighting equipment with the latest in technology.

Other city services include weekly garbage pickup and a recycling drop-off center on East Elm Street, accepting tin, plastic, glass, and newsprint. During winter months the city provides a fleet of 12 snow removing vehicles.

Its many retail stores, service businesses and well-stocked food stores draw customers from miles around.
