The Village of Mokena began as a result of a business opportunity. The new Rock Island Railroad was surveyed through the area in 1851 and by 1853 the new railroad was completed and rapid growth was underway. Now, over 100 years later, the Village of Mokena as evolved into a thriving community of over 10,000 people.
Mokena is located approximately 35 miles southwest of Chicago at the intersection of I-80 and LaGrange Rd. (Rt. 45) providing an easily accessible location for business along the I-80 corridor. Businesses and residents enjoy a full interchange at I-80 and Rt. 45 providing easy access to I-57, I-294 and I-55 as well as O'Hare and Midway airports. The new extension of I-355 to I-80 will allow express travel between the southwestern suburbs and the west and northwest suburbs.
Mokena is home to two Metra train stations, one at I-80 and LaGrange Rd. and one in the heart of the downtown business district. A new, larger train station building is now under construction. Located in fast growing Will County, Mokena has one of the lowest tax rates in the Chicagoland area.
An abundance of affordable new homes and townhomes have made Mokena the choice for hundreds of new residents, providing an abundant labor force at all levels for business. Mokena elementary school district and the Lincoln-Way High School district have consistently ranked among the highest in the state.
