Steger is the creation of John Valentine Steger, who moved his piano factory and many of its workers to this place on the Cook-Will county line, 35 miles south of the Loop. Steger's factory long ago faded from the scene, but the village's unique industrial tradition continues. Today, a spaghetti-maker is the village's largest employer.
Steger uses tax incentives and county grants to stimulate development in its two small industrial parks. Retail business is on a scale with the village's size and located in strip centers and plazas.
Illinois Highway 1 courses northward through Steger, intersecting with U.S. 30. I-57 and the Calumet Expressway are a few minutes west and east, respectively.
