An ideal location and excellent transportation are assets that have long made Harvey a great place for business and industry. The city is the third largest employment center in Chicago Southland and is often called the 'Hub of the South Suburbs.'
While industry has been its mainstay, health care and retail make significant contributions to the local economy. Ingalls Memorial Hospital, with its 704 beds and some 380 physicians on staff, is the community's largest employer. The number of retail enterprises continues to grow.
Harvey has an established Enterprise Zone, with the South Suburban Business Campus at its core. Tax incentives and other economic benefits are used to attract new businesses to the community. The presence in Harvey of the Chicago South Expo Center is a key business asset. It offers a variety of business events, trade shows, sports, and other entertainment features.
Harvey has quick access to key highways: I-294, I-80, and Illinois routes 1 and 83 border the city. Commuters to Chicago have a choice of two Metra rail stations. Pace buses also serve the community.
