The history of Thornton is a long one, beginning in the 1830s when a limestone quarry opened. In the years that followed, the quarry became the world's largest and many of the homes built in Thornton stand on foundations made from stone excavated from the quarry.
The quarry is still in operation, augmented by Campbell Soup Company and a variety of other manufacturing firms, all housed in the community's industrial park. Gallagher Asphalt Corporation is also located within the village.
A small town in size and in heart, Thornton residents shop the small, friendly stores that line its central commercial area and those scattered throughout the community. Proximity to Chicago allows convenient access to its professional sports, entertainment, and cultural amenities. Access to I-80 is nearby.
