Staying Active
The Countryside Recreation Department oversees parks and community recreation programs. The renovation of Countryside Park was among the department’s recent efforts. The 11-acre park features two softball diamonds, a soccer field, playground equipment, lighted tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, a skate park, an inline hockey rink, bocce ball court, lighted walking path and two gazebos that are the ideal location for summertime concerts.
Memorial Park was built during Countryside’s 40th anniversary celebration in 2000 and is a focal point for the community. Constructed in memory of those who served in the U.S. military, the park is the location of the city’s clock tower and carillon, as well as many memorial benches that provide for quiet reflection. Other area parks include Ideal Park, City Park and several “tot lots,” which offer playground equipment and amenities geared for younger children.
The Countryside Recreation Department also provides a wide variety of programs, mini-classes, special events and trips for all age groups. Playschool is available for children age two, three and four years old, and an Active Adult program offers classes, games and recreation programs for residents 50 years old and up. The Recreation Department is a member of the Gateway Special Recreation Association, which provides programs for mentally and physically disabled area residents.
