The philosophy of Crete-Monee School District 201-U is premised on the belief that each child shines in their own area. This philosophy has led to the development of special programs that allow each child the opportunity to find their niche and explore their talents; in whatever they have a passion for, music, art, performing art or athletics. School District 201-U encompasses the elementary, upper grade and high schools all under the umbrella of one administration. Four elementary schools educate children from kindergarten through fourth grade. They are Crete Elementary, Monee Elementary, Hickory Elementary and Talala Elementary. District 201-U merges all students at grade 5, when children attend the Crete-Monee Intermediate Center. Specifically designed with a focus curriculum for older children, the Center is the home of the Gifted Center, and offers pre-algebra to students in sixth grade, the first step in the District's Advanced Math Path. The Crete-Monee Middle School is the next step. It has received the Presidents Excellence in Education Award. Located in University Park, the school continues Advanced Math Path for seventh and eighth graders. High School Algebra is available as early as seventh grade and high school geometry is available to eighth graders. Successful completion of these courses permit students to enroll in Algebra II as incoming freshmen in high school, two years ahead of the national average freshman student. Crete-Monee High School features a college prep curriculum. Nearly 80% of graduates proceed to college. CMHS offers advanced placement courses in six subjects allowing students to earn college credit. Male and female athletes may choose from over 18 athletic programs including boys and girls golf and tennis. CMHS features technical computer courses such as CAD and its math team placed eighth in the state during 2000 - 2001. The schools female show choir, FACES, has won the grand championship at Walt Disneys Showstoppers National Competition for the past two years. Crete is also the site for excellent parochial schools. Deer Creek Christian, St. Liborius, Crete Evangelical Lutheran School, and Marian Catholic High School provide families with an alternative to the public schools as well as a well-rounded education for their children. Area institutions of higher learning include Prairie State College and Governors State University.
