The Red Mask Players entertain thousands each year with three theater productions each season, as well as two children's shows. The community theater group is housed in the ivy-covered Kathryn Randolph Theater, and is always looking for new acting talent or behind-the-scenes personnel. Since its beginning in 1955, the Danville Light Opera is the area's oldest musical theater troupe. They perform three musicals per year and auditions are open to the public. Sunshine II Productions, Ltd. performs dinner theatre plays and musicals during the summer. For music lovers, the professional 75-member Danville Symphony Orchestra performs concerts featuring classical symphonic works, ballet, opera and pop music. The Danville Municipal Band holds open-air concerts in Lincoln Park and Douglas Park throughout the summer.
The Danville Area Arts Council was established in 1974 to increase the public's understanding and awareness of the arts, and functions as an umbrella organization for many art groups in Vermilion and Edgar Counties. The Arts Council backs the annual "Arts In The Park" festival at Lincoln Park, which showcases performing and visual arts from the area. The Laura Lee Fellowship House sponsors educational and recreational programs for all age groups. Cultural groups include the Genesis Choir, Genesis Jr. Choir, Dramatic Players and Interpretive Dance. The Danville Art League promotes awareness of the visual arts, sponsoring monthly programs, art classes for children, and daytime or evening classes for adults. Their local studio serves as an art gallery, classroom and meeting room. The Illiana Writers Group works with local libraries to promote literacy and encourage writing. The Van Doren Writers Group meets biweekly at members' homes to discuss their writing efforts.
